Tigers’ LB to miss season opener

By Bud L. Ellis

It’s never really good news when one of your starting linebackers goes down days before kicking off the season.

At least for Brandon Maye, his injured knee does not look like it will keep him out of action long for the Clemson Tigers. As for the Tigers, at least it’s not an Atlantic Coast Conference they’re facing Saturday. ( Read More…)

It’s official: Clemson’s quarterback will get to chase his dreams of playing in the major leagues next season.

Kyle Parker agreed on a deal with the Colorado Rockies late Monday night that will allow him to play for the Tigers this fall, then play baseball next season. ( Read More…)

Clemson picked second in division in preseason voting

By Bud L. Ellis

Entering the 2010 season, the Clemson Tigers are hoping they can take one more step than they did in 2009.

The media voting in the Atlantic Coast Conference preseason predictions doesn’t see that happening.

The Tigers, who won the Atlantic Division last season and reached the ACC championship game, were picked to finish second in the division this season. Florida State earned 78 first-place votes to finish at the top of the division in the preseason rankings. ( Read More…)

Parker to return to Clemson

College baseball and football star Kyle Parker has announced that he will return to Clemson for the fall season.

The team’s starting quarterback, Parker was selected in the MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies.

Many felt that Parker would end his collegiate career and jump immediately to the Rockies’ minor league system, and it seemed he was strongly leaning the way for quite awhile.

Parker said that he is really excited about his decision and can’t wait to get out on the field with all of his teammates. ( Read More…)

Tigers hoping Parker returns

The Clemson Tigers are hoping that they can lure their starting quarterback back for another season.

Kyle Parker was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the first round of the MLB Draft and has said he plans to give up football.

Clemson hires Brownell

The Clemson Tigers have hired Wright State head coach Brad Brownell for the same position with their school.

The Tigers unexpectedly had to start a search for a basketball coach after Oliver Purnell suddenly left for DePaul.

Purnell had elevated Clemson back to an NCAA tournament team but had struggled to get them to the next level.

Brownell is not a big-name splash, but he did a nice job turning around both UNC Wilmington and Wright State.

The new head coach said he is looking forward to the opportunity of competing in the ACC despite the challenges it will present.

Purnell leaves Clemson

Clemson Tigers head coach Oliver Purnell has left the school to accept a job with the DePaul Blue Demons.

It was surprising that Purnell would suddenly leave Clemson, but he will be paid significantly more at DePaul.

It is unclear whether or not the Tigers were given the opportunity to increase Purnell’s current salary.

Purnell cited the tremendous opportunity to try and turn around a DePaul program that has been hopeless for more than a decade as the reason for the move.

He said it had nothing to do with Clemson or its fans and said that he had a wonderful experience in his time at the university.

Clemson bounced from first round of NCAAs

By Bud L. Ellis

Defense wins in the postseason. The Clemson Tigers found that out the hard way in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Tigers committed 15 turnovers and were stifled by Missouri in an 86-78 loss on Friday in the first round in Buffalo, N.Y.

For Clemson (21-11), the loss marks the third year in a row they entered the NCAAs as a higher seed and yet lost in the opening round. Clemson coach Oliver Purnell still seeks his first NCAA victory.

You can thank Missouri’s defense for this one. Those Tigers forced 15 steals and held Clemson to 44.4 percent from the field. Missouri, meanwhile, hit on 51.7 percent of its shots and made 21 free throws to Clemson’s 10.

Demontez Stitt scored 21 points to lead Clemson. Andre Young scored 19 and Jerai Grant added 12.

Clemson falls to Maryland, 88-79

The Clemson Tigers built a big first-half lead only to see it disappear in an 88-79 loss to the Maryland Terrapins.

The Tigers came out unusually hot from behind the arc, knocking down 8 of their 15 first-half three-point attempts.

Clemson, which is one of the worst outside shooting teams in the conference, fell back to Earth in the second half.

Meanwhile, the Terps stepped it up defensively and the crowd started to get really into the game, and it was all downhill from there.

The loss is costly in that the Tigers had a perfect opportunity to pick up a win that would have really helped their NCAA tournament hopes.

Tigers seek to finish strong entering ACC tournament

By Bud L. Ellis

Currently in fifth place in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings, the Clemson Tigers are one spot from being able to take off the opening day of the tournament.

The Tigers (19-7, 7-5) still have time to make that happen.

Trailing fourth place Wake Forest by just ½ game, the Tigers finish the regular season with a tough four-game stretch. Three of those games are on the road: at Maryland on Wednesday, at Florida State on Sunday, and at Wake Forest on March 7.

The Tigers play host to Georgia Tech on March 2.

Should the Tigers beat the Seminoles, with whom Clemson is tied with for fifth, and beat Wake, the Tigers would stand a good chance of finishing fourth in the league standings. That would give Clemson a bye through the first day of the tournament, starting March 11 at Greensboro, N.C.
